Below is a list of answers to frequently asked questions about the grievance process.  At the bottom of this page, you will find a link to download the grievance form.

WHAT IS A GRIEVANCE UNDER THIS AGREEMENT?

 A grievance is a formal complaint by an employee or the union alleging a violation of the collective agreement terms

WHO CAN FILE A GRIEVANCE?

 Any member of the union or the union on behalf of one or more members can file a grievance. 

WHAT ISSUES CAN LEAD TO A GRIEVANCE?

Issues may include but are not limited to disputes over pay, work conditions, disciplinary actions, and contract interpretations.

WHAT IS THE TIME FRAME FOR FILING A GRIEVANCE?

 A grievance must be filed within 15 days of the incident or the date when the complainant became aware of the issue

HOW DO I FILE A GRIEVANCE?

 Grievances should be filed in writing to a designated union representative, detailing the complaint and the desired outcome.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A GRIEVANCE IS FILED?

The grievance will be reviewed, and if valid, it will be discussed with management in an attempt to resolve the issue.

CAN A GRIEVANCE BE WITHDRAWN?

Yes, a grievance can be withdrawn at any stage by the person or the union that filed it.

WHAT IF THE GRIEVANCE IS NOT RESOLVED THROUGH INITIAL DISCUSSIONS?

If unresolved, the grievance may proceed to further steps as outlined in the agreement, potentially including mediation or arbitration

WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE FOR AN EFFECTIVE GRIEVANCE?

For an effective grievance, include a clear statement of the issue, reference to the specific contract provisions involved, detailed evidence or examples of the violation, the date(s) the issue occurred or was discovered, and a clear statement of the desired resolution or outcome. It's also helpful to include any previous steps taken to resolve the issue before filing the grievance.

WHAT SHOULD I EXCLUDE FROM A GRIEVANCE FORM?

In a grievance form, it's important to avoid including irrelevant personal opinions, speculative statements, or emotionally charged language. Stick to factual, concise, and clear descriptions of the issue and avoid unnecessary details that do not directly relate to the grievance.
